Des Moines, IA – Temperatures across Iowa will sharply decline this weekend, with a severe cold front arriving by Monday. Weather officials are warning residents to prepare for significant drops, with some areas experiencing highs below zero.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, Thursday and Friday will bring mild highs in the mid-30s to mid-40s across the state. However, conditions will rapidly change starting Saturday. Highs will plunge into the teens and low 20s, while Sunday continues the trend with temperatures barely reaching double digits.

By Monday, the Arctic blast will grip Iowa, with high temperatures struggling to rise above zero in northern regions, including Mason City and Decorah. Southern cities, such as Des Moines and Burlington, can expect highs between 7°F and 12°F. The NWS advises residents to dress warmly, limit outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

This significant shift in temperature stems from a fast-moving polar air mass sweeping across the Midwest. It could lead to frostbite in minutes if precautions are not taken. Travelers should monitor road conditions, as icy patches may develop during the cold spell.

The National Weather Service encourages Iowans to stay informed through their website and social media for weather updates. Residents should also prepare for potential power outages as extreme cold strains utility systems.

The bitterly cold temperatures are expected to ease by midweek, offering some relief. Until then, Iowans must remain vigilant and prioritize safety during this weather shift.
