Des Moines, IA – Iowa residents are preparing for dangerous wind chills and light snow flurries expected to impact the region tonight into Tuesday. Wind chill values could drop to as low as -20 degrees in some areas, posing serious risks for frostbite and hypothermia.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, flurries and a light dusting of snow are likely overnight, with accumulations expected to remain minimal. Tonight’s low is forecast to be around 4 degrees, but wind chills will make it feel significantly colder. On Tuesday, high temperatures will only reach 15 degrees, with wind chills staying below zero through most of the day.
Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activities, dress in layers, and ensure pets are sheltered. Drivers are also cautioned about possible slick spots on roads, particularly along I-35 and other high-traffic routes, as light snow and freezing temperatures create hazardous conditions.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to moderate slightly by midweek, with Wednesday’s high reaching 28 degrees under mostly sunny skies. By Thursday, highs may climb into the 40s, offering some relief from the frigid start to the week. However, another cold snap is anticipated over the weekend, with highs dropping back into the 20s and lows nearing single digits.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on changing conditions through local weather updates and take precautions to stay safe during the bitter cold.
