Des Moines, IA – A winter weather advisory has been issued for much of Iowa as freezing rain and drizzle are expected Wednesday, potentially making travel hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, freezing rain will develop across southern Iowa on Wednesday morning before spreading northward in the afternoon. The advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST for southern Iowa and from noon to 9 p.m. CST for central and northeastern areas. Ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are possible.

The advisory covers several counties, including Polk, Dallas, Warren, Marion, Madison, Black Hawk, Story, and Wapello, impacting cities such as Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and Ottumwa. The icy conditions could make roads slick, affecting the evening commute and increasing the risk of power outages.

Residents are urged to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and check road conditions via the Iowa 511 app or at www.511ia.org. Those traveling should prepare for potential delays and icy surfaces, particularly on untreated roads and sidewalks.

The freezing rain is expected to taper off by Wednesday evening, with improving conditions overnight.
