Kansas Highway Patrol Pursuit Ends in Deadly Kiowa County Crash

Kiowa County, KS – A stolen vehicle pursuit ended in a fatal crash on Thursday night in Kiowa County.
Troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol identified a stolen 2009 Ford Focus traveling east on US Highway 54 at 9:03 p.m. The car and its occupant were connected to a homicide investigation in Anderson County, Kansas. When troopers attempted a traffic stop near milepost 102, the driver initially complied by pulling over. Moments later, the driver fled, prompting a high-speed pursuit.
The Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office deployed spike strips near milepost 105, successfully disabling the vehicle. At 9:09 p.m., the car veered off the roadway, hit a field entrance, and rolled over. The driver, Jerry Wayne Thompson, was ejected and transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A loaded firearm was recovered at the crash site.
The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team investigated the crash. Authorities confirmed Thompson was connected to a homicide case under investigation in Anderson County.
