Grand Rapids, MI – West Michigan residents are bracing for lake effect snow, expected to bring 2 to 5 inches of accumulation by early Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Wednesday for several counties, including Ottawa, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon. Forecasters predict varying snow intensities, with locally heavier amounts in some areas.

The advisory warns of rapidly changing road and visibility conditions, particularly during the Tuesday evening commute. “Lake effect snow can create dangerous travel conditions in a short distance,” the NWS stated. Drivers should plan for slippery roads and use extra caution when traveling.

Affected areas include key cities such as Grand Haven, Holland, and South Haven, where snow bands may significantly reduce visibility. Temperatures are expected to hover in the low 30s, making untreated roads especially slick.

Officials recommend slowing down and maintaining a safe following distance. Visibility can drop suddenly during heavy snow bands, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Snowfall is expected to taper off gradually after midnight, but untreated roads may remain icy into Wednesday morning. Residents should monitor local weather updates and allow extra time for travel.

For those in the affected areas, preparedness is key. Have emergency supplies on hand and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall periods.
