LAPD officers shoot armed suspect in debris-filled backyard after standoff
A male suspect was shot by police Tuesday morning after a standoff in a backyard filled with “excessive” amounts of personal property and debris.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers initiated a foot pursuit of an armed suspect in the 25700 block of Belle Porte Avenue in Harbor City around 10:25 a.m.
Upon losing sight of the suspect, the officers established a perimeter and brought in K9 units to assist in the search, LAPD said; the K9 officers were able to determine the yet-to-be-identified suspect was likely inside a shed in the backyard of a residence, and the SWAT was called in to assist.
“The backyard presented significant challenges for officers due to an extensive amount of personal property and debris, making movement difficult,” LAPD said on X. “While SWAT was at the scene and had established containment, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
Police elaborated that the suspect did not immediately surrender after being shot but was eventually taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital with gunshot wound injuries.
The incident remains under investigation, and no further details were made available.
