Los Angeles Chargers to kick off NFL season

The NFL has enlisted the Los Angeles Chargers to kick off the 2025 season.

The Chargers will face off against the Detroit Lions on July 31 in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, a preseason matchup that’s played days before this year’s class will be enshrined in the Hall.

“This game features two teams that can be considered legitimate contenders to reach Super Bowl LX next February,” said Jim Porter, president and CEO of the Hall. “For them to face each other right out of the gate in Canton, Ohio, should create a dynamic opening to another spectacular NFL season.”

The teams’ selection is more than just a competitive matchup; both squads have ties to one of this year’s honorees, Chargers great Antonio Gates.

Gates scored 116 touchdowns in his 16 seasons, the most ever for a tight end, and his longtime team is facing his hometown crew, as Gates is a Detroit native.
