Los Angeles, CA -Southern California is under a Red Flag Warning through 10 a.m. Friday due to strong winds and extreme fire risk, with conditions peaking Thursday. Areas including Los Angeles and Ventura counties are experiencing wind gusts of 35-50 mph, with peaks of up to 65 mph in mountainous regions.
According to the National Weather Service, these conditions create a high potential for rapid fire growth, particularly in areas already affected by ongoing fires. Residents are urged to stay alert, follow evacuation orders, and prepare emergency plans if in high-risk zones.
The Hughes Fire in Castaic has already led to significant disruptions. The California Highway Patrol reports the closure of I-5 through the Grapevine, with detours set at SR-126 for northbound traffic and Grapevine Road for southbound traffic. The duration of the closure is unknown, and drivers are advised to use navigation apps for alternate routes.
Relief is expected by the weekend as winds subside, but authorities caution against complacency. Fire-prone regions should remain vigilant throughout the Red Flag period.
