Baltimore, MD – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect for western Maryland, Virginia, and portions of West Virginia, with dangerously low wind chills expected until 7 a.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, wind chills in Garrett and Allegany counties in Maryland, the Virginia Blue Ridge, and Pendleton and Grant counties in West Virginia could reach as low as -30°F. The coldest temperatures are expected overnight through Wednesday morning.
Residents should avoid outdoor activities whenever possible. If going outside is necessary, wear multiple layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings, to prevent frostbite and hypothermia. Exposed skin can develop frostbite within minutes in these conditions.
Additionally, freezing temperatures pose risks to water pipes, which should be wrapped or allowed to drip to avoid ruptures. In-ground sprinkler systems should be drained, and above-ground pipes covered.
Temperatures are forecast to improve slightly by late Thursday morning. Stay informed by monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.
