Maryland – An extreme cold watch has been issued for parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia beginning late Sunday night. Temperatures are expected to plunge to 30 degrees below normal, with wind chills dropping as low as 25 to 30 below zero in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service, this Arctic blast will extend from Sunday night through Thursday morning. Areas affected include Garrett and Extreme Western Allegany counties in Maryland, Western Highland County in Virginia, and Western Grant, Mineral, and Pendleton counties in West Virginia.
Frostbite could occur within 30 minutes on exposed skin. Hypothermia is also a significant risk in these conditions. The extreme cold may cause ruptured water pipes and strain heating systems.
Residents should wear layers, including hats and gloves, and limit outdoor exposure. Officials advise keeping pets indoors and ensuring outdoor animals have adequate shelter. Portable heaters should be used with caution to avoid fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Monitor weather updates and take precautions to stay safe during this dangerous cold spell.
