Oakland, MD – Firefighters and state investigators responded to a two-alarm fire that engulfed a stockyard in Garrett County. The blaze began Wednesday evening, leaving three cows dead and injuring several hogs.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal, the fire started at approximately 5:45 p.m. at Friends Stockyard on Stockyard Road. Multiple fire departments, including the Accident Volunteer Fire Department, worked through the night to contain the flames. Temperatures at the scene dropped to 10 degrees, complicating the operation.

Investigators suspect the fire may have originated from an extension cord connected to a portable heater or skid steer. However, they have not found evidence of criminal activity and are focusing on accidental causes.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries, received treatment at the scene, and was released. Numerous cattle and hogs escaped the fire, but firefighters found three cows and three hogs dead during overhaul efforts.

Emergency personnel requested help from local law enforcement and cowboys to secure livestock that fled the property. Authorities expect the investigation to continue through Thursday.

The State Fire Marshal emphasized the importance of reviewing safety precautions for portable heaters and electrical equipment during colder months.
