Boston, MA – A wintry mix is set to hit Boston on Thursday, bringing snow, ice, and dangerous black ice conditions for commuters. Slippery roads and reduced visibility could cause major travel disruptions, particularly during the morning rush hour.
According to the National Weather Service, snow and sleet will arrive early Thursday before turning into rain by the afternoon. Road temperatures may remain cold enough for black ice to develop, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Southeast winds up to 10 mph, with gusts reaching 20 mph, will accompany the system. Snow and sleet accumulation could reach up to 2 inches before melting into slush, creating treacherous driving conditions on major routes like I-93, Route 1, and the Mass Pike.
Thursday Night & Beyond
By Thursday night, rain will taper off, but temperatures will drop to 32°F, increasing the risk of refreezing. Commuters on Friday morning should be prepared for icy patches on sidewalks, driveways, and roadways. Friday will be mostly sunny with a high of 41°F, bringing temporary relief from the wintry weather.
However, another system is set to arrive over the weekend. Saturday will start off mostly sunny with a high of 35°F, but by Saturday night, a 90% chance of rain and snow returns. Winds will be light early in the day but pick up as precipitation moves in, making travel hazardous once again.
Sunday will continue the wet trend, with rain and snow showers persisting and a high near 41°F.
