St. Ignace, MI – A severe winter storm is causing treacherous conditions across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, particularly along US-2 between St. Ignace and Naubinway. Motorists are advised to avoid travel in the area.
According to the Mackinac County 911 & Emergency Management, whiteout conditions have drastically reduced visibility, making driving hazardous. The National Weather Service in Gaylord has issued a winter storm warning that remains in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches are expected, adding to the challenges.
Officials warn that visibility may drop below a quarter-mile due to heavy snow and high winds. Roads in affected areas, including Western Mackinac, Western Chippewa, and Beaver Island, are slick and dangerous. The storm has made travel conditions potentially life-threatening.
Emergency responders urge travelers to delay any non-essential travel. Those who must drive are advised to proceed with caution, leaving extra room between vehicles and avoiding sudden braking or acceleration. Drivers should also prepare for sudden changes in visibility and ensure their vehicles are equipped for winter weather.
Residents in the area are encouraged to monitor updates from local authorities and the National Weather Service. With hazardous conditions expected to persist until evening, public safety remains a top priority.
Be sure to stay updated as the storm progresses and seek alternate routes if travel cannot be postponed.
