MILWAUKEE, WI — Dangerously cold weather will grip southern Wisconsin starting tonight as an Extreme Cold Warning takes effect at midnight, replacing the current Cold Weather Advisory. Wind chills are expected to plunge to as low as -35°F, creating frostbite risks on exposed skin in just 10 minutes.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning spans Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha, and Walworth Counties and will remain in effect until noon Tuesday. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, dress in multiple warm layers, and check on vulnerable individuals. Pets and livestock should also be protected from the life-threatening cold.

Travel along major roadways like I-94 and I-43 could become hazardous as extreme wind chills lower visibility and increase the potential for frostbite. Drivers should carry winter emergency kits, including blankets, water, and a charged phone, in case of breakdowns.

Tuesday’s high in Milwaukee is expected to reach only 3°F, with wind chill values between -20°F and -30°F throughout the day. Light snow showers are forecast for Wednesday, with temperatures slightly improving to 22°F during the day but falling again at night.

By Thursday, conditions will stabilize with highs near 25°F, but nighttime lows will dip back into the teens. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and follow local alerts to ensure safety during this Arctic outbreak.
