win Cities, MN – Minnesotans are preparing for dangerously cold conditions as Arctic air sweeps through the region this weekend. Wind chills as low as -40 degrees will make outdoor activities hazardous.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that sub-zero temperatures will arrive Saturday night and persist through Tuesday afternoon. According to the NWS, combined with gusty winds, these conditions will lead to wind chills ranging between -25 and -40 degrees. The coldest temperatures are expected Sunday night through Monday morning, with areas like Alexandria and Little Falls likely experiencing the worst conditions.

Meteorologists emphasize the risk of frostbite and hypothermia due to prolonged exposure. Frostbite can occur within minutes in wind chills of -30 or lower. Residents should limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and ensure proper heating indoors.

The probability map shows a near certainty (100%) for wind chills of -30 or colder in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. Southern parts of the state, including Mankato and Fairmont, may see slightly less extreme conditions but should still prepare for wind chills below -20.

Schools and businesses are monitoring forecasts and may adjust schedules if conditions worsen. Authorities urge everyone to check on vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those without adequate heating. Pets should also be kept indoors during this cold spell.

This Arctic blast underscores the importance of staying informed. Local emergency management agencies and weather services will continue to provide updates.
