Duluth, MN – Cook County residents are bracing for a hazardous winter weather event overnight, with snow and high winds creating dangerous conditions. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory Sunday night, warning of additional snow accumulation up to one inch and wind gusts reaching 55 mph. Blowing snow could reduce visibility to less than one mile, making travel treacherous. According to the NWS, the affected area includes Southern Cook County and the Grand Portage Reservation.
The advisory cautions residents to prepare for slippery roads and potential travel disruptions during the Monday morning commute. Winds may also damage trees and power lines, increasing the risk of power outages.
Local authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel. Those who must drive are urged to slow down and exercise caution, particularly in areas of reduced visibility. For road updates, drivers can call 511 or visit Minnesota’s travel information website at www.511mn.org.
The hazardous weather is part of a broader system sweeping across northern Minnesota. Forecasters predict conditions will gradually improve after the advisory ends Monday morning, but lingering snow and gusty winds may still impact exposed areas.
Residents should remain prepared for emergencies by charging devices, securing outdoor items, and having backup heat sources ready. As always, stay informed by following local weather updates at www.weather.gov/duluth.
