Jackson, MS – Rain is forecasted across much of Mississippi tonight, with the best chances east of I-55, but stronger storms are unlikely. Overnight temperatures will drop to the upper 40s and low 50s, bringing cooler air ahead of a significant winter storm pattern.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a dangerous cold front is expected to hit the region Sunday night, lasting through Wednesday. Wind chills are anticipated to fall as low as 5 to 10 degrees, posing serious risks of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed for extended periods. Pipes are also at risk of freezing. Residents are urged to insulate pipes and limit outdoor exposure during this time.
By Tuesday morning, accumulating snow and sleet are likely across northern Mississippi, with central areas seeing lesser amounts. The most impacted areas include Greenwood, Cleveland, and Philadelphia, where travel could become hazardous. Commuters should prepare for icy roads and reduced visibility. Timing suggests snowfall will begin by daybreak Tuesday and continue through much of the day.
Temperatures will remain near or below freezing through midweek, exacerbating the potential for icy conditions. The elevated risk zone includes major highways like I-55 and I-20. Travelers are encouraged to monitor local updates and delay non-essential trips.
By Thursday, conditions will begin to improve, with temperatures rebounding slightly, though overnight lows will still hover near freezing.
