Mississippi Weather Update: Enhanced Risk of Tornadoes and Strong Winds Through Early Sunday Morning

Jackson, MS – Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are expected across central Mississippi late Saturday afternoon through early Sunday, with damaging winds up to 70 mph possible, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

The NWS reported that the region faces an enhanced risk, with storms beginning around 5 p.m. in western areas like Greenville and moving eastward through Jackson between 8 p.m. and midnight, before reaching eastern cities such as Meridian by 1 a.m. Sunday. A strong tornado cannot be ruled out, forecasters said.

Sustained winds of 20-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are anticipated, which may cause tree damage and hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for power outages.

The cold front pushing through the state will bring severe weather ahead of its arrival and strong winds behind it. Authorities urge residents to stay alert for weather updates and take cover if warnings are issued.
