A significant fire broke out Thursday morning at a strip mall on 7th Street in Moline, damaging several businesses.
According to the Moline Fire Department, crews arrived at 1640 7th Street at approximately 10:14 a.m. and found heavy smoke emanating from one of the businesses. Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack but were challenged by the fire’s rapid spread into adjacent areas and a nearby vacant unit.
Specialized tools were deployed to combat the fire, with heavy equipment used to access concealed spaces. Compounding the difficulty were cold temperatures and the construction of one of the affected businesses, which housed electronics and batteries that complicated suppression efforts.
Assistance was provided by multiple agencies, including the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department, East Moline Fire Department, and others. The Moline Police Department assisted with traffic control, while city public works provided equipment to support firefighting operations in freezing conditions.
The fire remains under investigation by the Moline Fire Department’s Bureau of Investigations.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the department at 309-524-2250.
