Great Falls, MT – A significant winter storm continues to affect central Montana, with heavy snow and strong winds creating hazardous conditions. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. MST Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, snow totals will vary by elevation, with 2 to 5 inches expected at lower elevations and up to 15 inches on higher peaks. Mountain ranges, including the Little Belt, Highwood, and Snowy Mountains, are bracing for accumulations between 6 and 12 inches. Gusting winds of up to 50 mph are expected to exacerbate blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility and making travel difficult.
The impacted areas include Judith Basin County, Fergus County, and the Bears Paw Mountains. Travelers should anticipate snow-packed roads and consider tire chains for safe passage. Residents in the backcountry are urged to prepare for dangerous conditions, including damage to trees caused by strong winds.
Officials recommend keeping emergency supplies in vehicles and checking road conditions via the Montana Department of Transportation’s 511 service.
This storm could also pose risks to livestock. For more information, visit the National Weather Service’s Cold Air Advisory for Newborn Livestock program.
The warning reflects an 80% likelihood of impactful winter weather persisting through Wednesday evening.
