Central Nebraska – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of central and south-central Nebraska, effective from noon to 6 p.m. CST today. The warning signals critical fire weather conditions, including gusty winds and low relative humidity.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the affected areas include Valley, Greeley, Sherman, Howard, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, Gosper, Phelps, and Kearney counties. Winds are expected to sustain speeds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph. Relative humidity levels will drop as low as 16 to 20 percent.
In the Loup Rivers Basin, the National Weather Service in North Platte has reported similar conditions, with gusts up to 30 mph and relative humidity near 17 percent. Temperatures are forecasted to reach the low 50s.
Officials warn that any fires that develop could spread rapidly, making outdoor burning highly dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could ignite fires and to report any smoke or fire immediately.
A Red Flag Warning indicates that weather conditions conducive to wildfires are either occurring or imminent. Stay alert for updates and exercise caution throughout the day.
