North Platte, NE – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Snow Squall Warning for central Sheridan County, effective until 2:45 p.m. MST Wednesday.
A dangerous snow squall was observed near Rushville at 2:13 p.m., moving southeast at 30 mph. Intense bursts of heavy snow, combined with wind gusts exceeding 35 mph, are creating hazardous travel conditions. Sudden whiteouts and blowing snow may lead to rapidly falling visibility and slippery roads.
According to the NWS, affected areas include Rushville, Walgren Lake State Recreation Area, Lone Butte, and highway crossings over the Niobrara River. Specific highways under alert are Highway 20 between mile markers 81 and 97, and Highway 250 between mile markers 30 and 48.
Drivers in the area should exercise extreme caution. Rapid changes in weather conditions can occur within minutes, potentially making travel dangerous. The NWS urges motorists to reduce speeds and be alert for sudden whiteout conditions that severely impair visibility.
Radar and webcams confirm the severity of the squall, which is expected to continue impacting the region for the next half hour. Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary trips until the warning expires and conditions improve.
Residents near affected areas should monitor updates from local weather authorities and avoid outdoor activities during the squall. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
This warning underscores the unpredictability of winter weather in the region. Preparedness and awareness remain key to staying safe during these rapidly changing conditions.
