Albuquerque, NM – A powerful winter storm is set to impact northern and western New Mexico from Thursday evening through late Friday night, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the storm could bring between 5 and 15 inches of snow, with isolated totals reaching up to 2 feet in higher elevations. Affected areas include the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Chuska Mountains, Jemez Mountains, and the Far Northwest Highlands. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, leading to blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility.
The storm is expected to make travel difficult to impossible in some regions, with road closures and significant delays likely. Bridges and overpasses may become slick and hazardous. Residents in Chama, the Tusas Mountains, and other affected regions are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
Officials recommend monitoring weather updates and avoiding unnecessary travel. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit, extra food and water, and allow for extended travel times.
