Nintendo officially announces Switch 2, releases later this year

Just a couple months short of the eight-year anniversary of the Nintendo Switch, the hybrid gaming console that changed the way video games are played, the Japanese gaming giant finally announced its successor on Thursday.

In a 2 minute, 21 second video posted online, Nintendo officially revealed the aptly named Switch 2. The new console, just like its trailblazing predecessor, will serve both as a home console that can connect to a TV as and a mobile system with its own screen.

The controllers, named JoyCons on the first Switch, can connect to the sides of the console for handheld gaming, or can detach and be used separately.

Official specifications weren’t released, but the video emphasized that the new console has a larger screen and controllers than the initial Switch.

What appeared to be a new Mario Kart game was also teased, with footage being shown off on the screen, but no details were released.

No other games were announced, but the video did confirm that most physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will be compatible with the Switch 2. Nintendo said more about the backwards compatibility will be released at a later date.

The video didn’t reveal much more about the Switch 2, but gamers won’t have to wait too long for more details. On April 2, Nintendo will fully unveil the console, and is likely to discuss the launch lineup of new games.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will release in 2025, although an exact date wasn’t revealed. Those in Los Angeles itching to get their hands on the new console will be able to do so at a hands-on event from April 11-13.

Starting on Friday, anyone with a free Nintendo account can register to play the Switch 2 at the event on Nintendo’s website. Registrant’s will then be placed into a random raffle to decide who gets to participate.

The Los Angeles event takes place at Television City, adjacent to The Grove.
