Blacksburg, VA – Residents across portions of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia should prepare for life-threatening cold conditions starting Monday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from 4 a.m. to noon Monday, with a follow-up Extreme Cold Watch effective Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.

According to the NWS, wind chills could plummet to 20 below zero in areas such as Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga Counties in North Carolina; Tazewell, Wythe, and Giles Counties in Virginia; and Mercer and Summers Counties in West Virginia. In Western Greenbrier County, West Virginia, wind chills as low as 25 below zero are expected through noon Wednesday.

Exposure to these temperatures could result in frostbite in as little as 30 minutes. Extended freezing conditions may also lead to ruptured water pipes.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, when venturing outdoors. The NWS recommends staying indoors whenever possible and ensuring pets and livestock are sheltered.

These dangerously cold conditions are part of a broader Arctic outbreak affecting much of the region. Residents should monitor local updates and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold.
