Asheville, NC – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for North Carolina’s mountain regions, with dangerously low temperatures and wind chills forecasted through noon Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, areas above 3,500 feet, including Buncombe, Avery, and Jackson counties, will experience wind chills as low as 20°F below zero. Below 3,500 feet, wind chills are expected to range from 5°F to 14°F below zero.
The cold poses a significant risk of frostbite, which could occur on exposed skin within 30 minutes. Hypothermia is also a concern. The advisory extends to pets and livestock, which may face life-threatening exposure without adequate protection.
Residents are advised to dress in layers, covering exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face masks if venturing outdoors. The weather service recommends avoiding unnecessary travel and taking precautions to safeguard animals.
The advisory affects cities like Asheville, Hendersonville, and Brevard. Those in higher elevations, including areas near Black Mountain and Cullowhee, should remain especially cautious of the extreme cold through Monday morning.
Stay tuned to local updates and prepare accordingly as frigid conditions persist into the start of the week.
