Newport, NC – Rain showers will dominate the weather across eastern North Carolina today, with highs reaching the mid to upper 50s. The heaviest rain is expected midday, though totals will remain under half an inch. Drivers along US 70 and nearby roads should expect slick conditions and allow extra travel time.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport, a cold front will move through the region late Sunday, bringing frigid temperatures and increased chances of snow. Tonight, expect mostly cloudy skies with rain likely after midnight, accompanied by lows around 44°F. Winds could gust up to 15 mph. Sunday’s high will rise to 62°F before temperatures plunge into the teens by Monday night.

Looking ahead, very cold air will settle in early next week. Snowfall is increasingly likely Tuesday evening into Wednesday, particularly in higher elevations and inland areas. Tuesday’s high will hover near 36°F before dropping to 21°F overnight. The National Weather Service cautions that accumulating snow could create hazardous travel conditions along coastal and secondary roads.

Residents should prepare for possible disruptions. Stock emergency supplies, check vehicle readiness for icy roads, and monitor updates from local authorities. Spotter activation is not anticipated, but snowfall amounts could impact eastern NC through midweek.
