Grand Forks, ND – Eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota are experiencing dangerously low temperatures, with wind chills plummeting to -40 degrees. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until noon Tuesday. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity and wear protective clothing to prevent frostbite, which can occur in as little as 10 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop to -15 degrees overnight, with wind chills between -30 and -40 degrees. The advisory spans eastern North Dakota, including Grand Forks, and extends to northwest Minnesota. Areas such as Detroit Lakes, Bemidji, and Thief River Falls are also affected.
Tuesday will bring some relief, with highs near zero and lighter winds. However, the bitter cold will persist through Tuesday night, with temperatures falling to around -6. Residents should prepare for continued subzero conditions and take precautions to protect pets, pipes, and vehicles.
The hazardous weather outlook for the week predicts potential drifting snow on Wednesday as temperatures climb to the low 20s, but icy conditions may persist. By Thursday, highs will reach the 30s, offering a brief respite from the extreme cold.
