North Texas Shooting: 19-Year-Old Gets Life Sentence for Killing 5-Year-Old and 17-Year-Old

After a jury in Tarrant County, Texas, convicted a 19-year-old male guilty of capital murder in the shooting deaths of a 5-year-old boy and a 17-year-old adolescent in 2022, the accused was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.

The verdict was handed down on Tuesday. During the tragic event that took place on August 28, 2022, Jay Shawn Nixon-Clark, who was 16 years old at the time, was involved along with other people he knew.

The trio allegedly drove through a neighborhood in the northwest part of Fort Worth, stopped their vehicle on Steel Dust Drive, and observed a residence for more than three minutes, as stated in the court records.

The door to the garage of the house was left open at the time, and children and teenagers were playing inside of it.

The two individuals, Nixon-Clark and another person, exited the vehicle and ran in the direction of the residence while wearing a mask and armed with a firearm.

Before driving away from the area in their car, the two individuals began fire, firing more than a dozen shots against the target.

“They riddled that garage with bullets,” Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Melinda Hogan stated. “They unloaded 17 rounds into the garage where five children are playing.”

In the aftermath of the gunfire, Rayshard Javon Scott, who was only five years old, and Jamarrien Monroe, who was seventeen years old, both lost their lives. During the incident, Monroe’s kid, who was only 18 months old at the time, sustained injuries in addition to the fatalities.

“When [Nixon-Clark] masked up and grabbed a weapon, he knew what he was doing,” said Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Bill Vassar.

The relatives of the victims were left with an indelible mark as a result of the loss of life. During the victim impact statement that she gave in the courtroom, Tijuana West, the mother of Jamarrien Monroe, addressed Nixon-Clark.

The terrible anguish and sense of loss that her family has been going through was articulated by her statement, “We can never get back what we lost.” Nixon-Clark received a message of optimism from her, in spite of the fact that she was in a state of sadness.

She told him that he has a family that loves him and that “there is a greatness in you that goes way beyond your circumstances.”

Additionally, a charge of capital murder has been brought against Anthony Bell-Johnson, who is 23 years old, in connection with the same double homicide.

Separate proceedings will be undertaken for his trial. Both the sentencing of Nixon-Clark and the upcoming trial of Bell-Johnson bring to light the seriousness of the crime as well as the ongoing search for justice for the young lives that were taken by this senseless act of violence.
