Chicago, IL – Light snow and freezing temperatures are creating hazardous travel conditions across northern Illinois today, with more snow expected overnight.

Snowfall is most significant along and north of I-80, particularly near I-88, where up to an inch of accumulation is possible. The National Weather Service warns untreated roads will likely become slick, especially as wind chills plummet to -10°F by tonight. Drivers are encouraged to plan extra travel time, reduce speeds, and remain alert for icy patches and reduced visibility during the evening commute.

Snow will continue overnight into early Thursday, shifting south of I-80. By Thursday morning, southern areas of the Chicago metro may experience lingering flurries, while conditions to the north begin to clear. Cold air remains in place, with Thursday’s high reaching only 19°F and wind chills hovering near zero.

Improvement is expected Friday as high pressure moves into the region, bringing sunny skies and slightly warmer temperatures. By Saturday, highs in the mid-30s will offer some relief, although overnight lows will stay below freezing.

Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and exercise caution on the roads through Thursday morning. Pedestrians should also watch for icy sidewalks and dress warmly to avoid frostbite risk. For updates, visit weather.gov/chicago.

The rest of the week offers a gradual return to quieter weather, but it’s essential to remain vigilant for slick surfaces and cold-related hazards over the next 24 hours.
