Des Moines, IA – Residents across Iowa are preparing for dangerously cold temperatures, with an Extreme Cold Warning in effect from midnight Monday to noon Tuesday. Wind chill values are expected to plummet to as low as 35 degrees below zero.
According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory is also in effect from 6 p.m. Monday to midnight. These conditions pose a significant frostbite risk, with exposed skin potentially freezing within 10 minutes.
The warning primarily affects northern and central Iowa, including cities like Mason City, Ames, and Fort Dodge. Audubon and Guthrie Counties are also under advisories, with similar extreme wind chills anticipated. By Tuesday afternoon, wind chill values are forecasted to improve, ranging between 5 to 15 below zero.
Officials urge residents to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, if venturing outdoors. Travelers should take extra precautions and limit exposure to the elements.
Temperatures this low can strain heating systems and pose risks for those without proper shelter. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors and ensure pets are brought indoors.
