Wilmington, OH – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Cold Watch for central and southern Ohio, southeast Indiana, and northern Kentucky, starting late Sunday night and continuing through Wednesday morning.
According to the NWS, temperatures could plunge to 5 to 10 degrees below zero, with wind chills reaching 15 to 25 degrees below zero. The affected areas include cities such as Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, and surrounding communities in the Ohio Valley. These dangerously low temperatures can lead to frostbite in minutes and may cause ruptured water pipes.
Residents are urged to take precautions, including insulating exposed pipes and allowing faucets to drip to prevent freezing. Additionally, officials advise limiting outdoor exposure and dressing in multiple layers if venturing outside is necessary.
The extreme cold is expected to develop as an arctic air mass sweeps into the region late Sunday. Temperatures will remain dangerously low through Wednesday morning, with the coldest conditions likely overnight Monday and Tuesday.
The NWS recommends checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets and preparing homes for the extended freeze. Updates and additional warnings may follow as weather patterns evolve.
