Medford, OR – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snow, freezing rain, and dangerous black ice to Southern Oregon on Thursday, making travel treacherous. The National Weather Service warns that I-5 near Grants Pass, including Sexton, Canyon, and Camas Mountains, will see hazardous conditions.

According to the US National Weather Service Medford, snow showers will continue through Wednesday night into Thursday, with up to 6 inches possible at higher elevations. Snow levels will rise to 2,300 feet by Thursday afternoon before transitioning to rain. Ice accumulation and strong winds could lead to power outages and road closures.

Motorists should exercise extreme caution, especially on bridges and overpasses, where black ice is hardest to detect. The Oregon Department of Transportation advises carrying chains and allowing extra travel time.

Looking ahead, the winter weather pattern will persist through the weekend, with more rain and snow showers expected Friday and Saturday. Drivers should stay updated on road conditions and check weather alerts before heading out.
