Philadelphia, PA – A winter storm and extreme cold are set to impact southeastern Pennsylvania, including the I-95 corridor, starting Sunday night. Residents should prepare for snow accumulation and dangerously low wind chills that could reach single digits early next week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Mount Holly, a low-pressure system is expected to move through the region Sunday evening into Monday morning. Snowfall totals remain uncertain, but areas north of Philadelphia could see significant accumulation. Meanwhile, southern sections may receive a wintry mix or rain, depending on the storm’s track. Regardless, slippery roads are likely to develop, especially during evening commutes.
By Monday and Tuesday, arctic air will dominate the region, driving wind chills to as low as -10°F in some areas. Daytime highs will hover in the teens, with lows dropping into single digits, prompting concerns over frozen pipes and increased heating demand. The NWS advises residents to take precautions now, such as ensuring heating systems are functioning and dressing in layers to avoid frostbite.
Looking ahead, Friday will bring a brief reprieve with sunny skies and a high near 41°F. Saturday is expected to remain mild with highs near 42°F before precipitation moves in late Saturday night.
Travelers along I-95 and other major highways should monitor updates closely and exercise caution on untreated roads. Snow showers are projected to begin Sunday evening, peaking overnight before tapering off Monday morning.
