Pittsburgh, PA – A significant winter storm is set to impact Pennsylvania and West Virginia on Thursday, with up to 8 inches of snow expected in some areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning, effective from 7 a.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday.
According to the NWS Pittsburgh office, areas like Ligonier, Kingwood, and Terra Alta are forecast to see between 4 to 8 inches of snow. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated in higher elevations, where winds could gust as high as 35 mph, causing hazardous travel conditions.
The warning covers higher elevations in Westmoreland and Fayette counties in Pennsylvania and Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia. Residents in these areas should expect dangerous road conditions, reduced visibility, and possible delays during Thursday morning and evening commutes.
Local officials are urging residents to take precautions ahead of the storm. People should monitor forecasts, prepare emergency kits, and avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours. The NWS Pittsburgh encourages the public to report snow and ice conditions by calling 412-262-1988 or using social media.
Travelers should plan for difficult driving conditions, especially Thursday afternoon and evening when snowfall rates may be highest. Blowing snow could further reduce visibility, complicating road safety.
This storm marks one of the most significant snowfalls of the season, with residents urged to prioritize safety and remain vigilant as conditions worsen.
