Popular snack sold at Walmart, Aldi stores recalled

An Ohio company is recalling 15,000 cases of oyster crackers that might be contaminated by metal.

Shearer’s Foods, headquartered in Massillon, issued a voluntary recall for the crackers sold across the U.S. under store labels at Aldi, Walmart and Giant Eagle in February. The crackers may be contaminated with stainless steel wire, which led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a Class II level classification.

There are more than 300 Walmart locations and 109 Aldi locations in California.

A Level II means exposure “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the FDA.

In addition to Ohio, the crackers were distributed to stores in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The company says individuals who are known to have purchased the items are being contacted.
