BAKERSFIELD, California — The Bakersfield Police Department says that a man is facing charges because he shot himself and another man during a fight in a downtown Bakersfield bar early on Saturday morning.
Officers say they were patrolling the area around 19th Street and Eye Street when they heard about a shooting at the Gatsby’s Lounge.
When police arrived a short time later, they caught a man who they say had a pistol and was leaving the bar.
Eddieberto Nevel, 31, from Bakersfield, was later named as the person who did it.
During the investigation, police found out that Nevel was arguing with another man inside the bar and tried to pull a gun out of his pocket.
Nevel is said to have pulled out the gun and fired one shot, hitting himself. The other man, whose name is unknown, tried to take Nevel’s gun, and he was shot once during the fight.
Nevel and the person who was hurt were both taken to a nearby hospital. The person who was hurt had “moderate” injuries.
Once Nevel’s health was stable enough to leave the hospital, he was put under arrest.
Nevel was taken to jail on several charges, such as assault with a dangerous weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, and resisting arrest.
He is supposed to go to court Tuesday, May 23.
