Chicago, IL – A Siberian Arctic blast is sweeping across the United States, delivering life-threatening cold to millions. Wind chills have plunged to as low as -50°F in the Midwest, while the South experiences rare lows in the teens.

According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, frostbite and hypothermia remain the greatest risks. Frostbite causes numbness, pale or waxy skin, and hardened extremities, while hypothermia symptoms include confusion, uncontrollable shivering, and slurred speech. Immediate medical care is essential if these symptoms arise.

The extreme cold, driven by Siberian air currents, has prompted widespread weather alerts. Residents are urged to stay indoors, bundle up in layers, and limit outdoor exposure. If frostbite occurs, affected areas should be warmed gradually with lukewarm water, and hypothermia victims should be moved to warm, dry spaces.

This rare blast of Siberian air is expected to persist through the weekend, with officials advising extra vigilance for at-risk groups, including children, the elderly, and pets.
