Reno, NV – A major winter storm is bringing heavy snow and dangerous winds to the Sierra Nevada, impacting travel and local communities through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 AM Wednesday for the Greater Lake Tahoe area, 10 PM Tuesday for Lassen, Plumas, and Sierra counties, and 10 AM Wednesday for Mono County. Snowfall is expected to range from 1 to 3 feet in higher elevations, with gusts up to 100 mph along the Sierra crest.
Drivers should expect hazardous conditions, especially along Highway 395 and I-80, with near-whiteout conditions possible. The strongest winds and heaviest snow will impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes, making travel difficult or impossible in some areas.
Lake Tahoe will also see wind gusts up to 40 mph, causing waves up to 4 feet on the lake. Power outages and downed trees are possible due to 85 mph winds in Mono County.
Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential power disruptions. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights. For updated road conditions, call 511 or check local transportation websites.
