Columbia, SC – South Carolina residents are urged to take precautions as freezing temperatures and black ice create hazardous conditions Thursday morning. A cold weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m., warning of temperatures near 10 degrees and potential for slick roads.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), melting snow and rain from earlier this week have refrozen, particularly on secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel, reduce speeds, and use extra caution on Interstate 77 and other key routes around Columbia. Walking in parking lots and sidewalks also poses risks of slips and falls due to black ice.

The bitter cold will ease slightly by Friday, with temperatures climbing to a high near 48 under sunny skies. However, lows will dip back to 21 degrees Friday night. Saturday promises clearer conditions, with sunshine and a high near 49, but the chill will linger with nighttime lows around 26.

Looking ahead, Sunday offers a reprieve with highs reaching 55 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Monday brings a slight chance of rain before skies clear again by midweek, with temperatures expected to reach 61 on Tuesday.

Residents are advised to dress warmly, bring pets indoors, and check on neighbors who may need assistance. Black ice is particularly treacherous as it’s difficult to see; remain vigilant during early morning hours.
