Charleston, SC – Freezing rain followed by snow is expected to create dangerous conditions in Charleston and surrounding areas early this week. The National Weather Service predicts the worst impacts will occur Tuesday night into Wednesday, with hazardous road conditions expected.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing rain could begin Tuesday evening, transitioning to snow overnight as temperatures plummet. Local highways, including I-26 and US-17, could become icy, posing significant risks for drivers. Residents are advised to limit non-essential travel and prepare for delays or closures.

Today, rain will dominate the forecast with highs near 58°F, tapering off by evening. Sunday will bring scattered showers early, clearing into a cloudy afternoon with highs around 63°F. On Monday, the region will see a cool, sunny day, with highs reaching 41°F.

By Tuesday, conditions worsen. Rain will begin early in the day and transition to freezing rain by the evening. Low temperatures of 27°F are expected overnight, allowing ice to accumulate before snow begins. Wednesday will bring a chance of snow and breezy conditions, with highs near 35°F.

Local emergency officials are urging residents to prepare now. Stock up on essentials, check weather alerts, and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter conditions. Power outages are possible due to ice buildup on lines and trees.
