Aberdeen, SD — Residents of northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota should prepare for extreme cold as wind chills could plummet to -45°F from Sunday evening through Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, the Extreme Cold Watch affects cities including Aberdeen, Watertown, Sisseton, and Ortonville. The dangerously low temperatures can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Officials advise dressing in layers, covering exposed skin with hats, face masks, and gloves, and limiting time outdoors. The cold conditions may also impact travel and daily activities across the region.

The watch covers multiple counties, including Brown, Codington, Day, Grant, and Roberts in South Dakota, and Traverse and Big Stone in Minnesota. Historically, similar cold snaps have caused disruptions in the region, making it essential for residents to take necessary precautions.

The extreme cold is expected to ease by late Wednesday morning, but residents should stay updated through local alerts and weather updates.
