New Orleans, LA – Residents across southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi are under an extreme cold warning beginning Tuesday evening as temperatures and wind chills plummet. The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory effective from 6 p.m. Monday through Tuesday evening, transitioning to an extreme cold warning from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the NWS, wind chills could drop as low as 13°F through Tuesday evening, then fall further to a dangerous 7°F during the extreme cold warning period. Officials warn that frostbite and hypothermia are significant risks for anyone outdoors without proper protection.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings, and to take precautions to prevent water pipes from freezing. Insulating pipes or allowing them to drip can minimize damage. Officials also remind the public to avoid using grills or generators indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.

Pet owners should ensure animals have warm, dry shelter, food, and access to unfrozen water. Community members are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and relatives during this frigid period.

The warning comes as temperatures remain unseasonably low for the region, with freezing conditions expected to persist through Wednesday morning.
