Lubbock, TX – Residents of the Texas Panhandle should brace for strong winds today, with gusts up to 50 mph expected. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., warning of potentially hazardous conditions along major highways, including US 84. Drivers should exercise caution, especially those in high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory spans across the South Plains and Northwest Texas regions, including Lubbock and surrounding counties. Westerly winds will blow between 25 to 35 mph, with occasional gusts strong enough to create blowing dust, reducing visibility and making travel risky. Temperatures will reach a high of 65°F today before dropping to 27°F overnight.
Saturday will bring calmer weather but significantly cooler temperatures. Expect sunny skies with highs near 39°F and lows dipping to 16°F by Saturday night. Light snow flurries are possible late in the evening, particularly along the Caprock.
The cold front intensifies Sunday, with highs struggling to reach 29°F. Overnight wind chills could plunge between 0°F and -10°F, presenting risks of frostbite for anyone exposed for extended periods. Residents are urged to bundle up and limit time outdoors.
Looking ahead, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday will remain cold, with highs around 28°F and lows at 12°F. The bitter conditions are forecast to persist through Tuesday.
