SWAT team engages in standoff with suspect in front of Long Beach home
A SWAT team was dispatched to a home and engaged in a standoff with a suspect in Long Beach on Wednesday afternoon.
Sky5 footage showed a heavy law enforcement presence outside of a home on 65th Street near Butler Avenue around 12:50 p.m., with multiple Bearcat vehicles and Long Beach Police Department squad cars parked along the street and in nearby alleyways.
Two armor-clad officers were seen perched on a nearby garage rooftop, aerial footage showed. Further footage showed officers with their guns drawn approaching the home’s front window and deploying tear gas before retreating.
Around 1:10 p.m., an individual was seen exiting the back of the home. They surrendered after climbing a ladder and were quickly taken into custody by SWAT officers, although their connection to the investigation is not known.
It also remains unclear if there were any more people inside the residence. An all-clear was not immediately given after the person was detained, but SWAT team members were seen making entry into the home at 1:25 p.m.
The 91 and 710 freeways, which are both directly adjacent to the neighborhood, were not immediately impacted by the standoff. Sky5 footage showed that some residents had been evacuated to nearby Coolidge Park.
Long Beach Police Department officials would not immediately comment on the circumstances surrounding the standoff.
