Universal City hotel expansion project approved by L.A. City Council

A new luxury 18-story tower will be coming to the Hilton Los Angeles/ Universal City Hotel after the Los Angeles City Council approved expansion plans during its meeting on Tuesday.

L.A. City Council members also adopted vesting zone change and height requirements, approved conditional use permits for the sale of alcohol on-site and live entertainment, and signed off on the project’s final environmental impact review, according to the L.A. Daily News.

According to city planning documents, the tower will be added to the existing 24-story building at 555 E. Universal Hollywood Drive.

The new building will have 395 guest rooms, a spa, three restaurants, an indoor/outdoor bar, two pools and a single-level lobby lounge/bar connecting to the main hotel. A meeting room and a three-level parking garage will also be built.

The 7.26-acre site will feature a total of 890 guest rooms and comprise 696,609 square feet of floor area.

Sun Hill Properties Inc., the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City hotel operator, announced the expansion plans in 2017.

“After over 30 years of serving Los Angeles and the greater San Fernando Valley, we owe these additional rooms to the region as we prepare to host the 2028 Olympic Games and tourism numbers continue to rise,” Mark Davis, president and chief executive officer of Sun Hill Properties Inc., said in a statement.

The approval comes after reports that a new 500-room hotel could be coming to Universal Studios Hollywood.
