Vermont Braces for Dangerous Wind Chills Starting Monday, with Lows Plunging to -20°F

Burlington, VT – An arctic cold front will descend on Vermont and northern New York starting Monday, bringing wind chills as low as -20°F. The National Weather Service warns residents to take immediate precautions against prolonged exposure to the extreme cold.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, dangerously cold wind chills will develop late Monday and persist through Thursday. Temperatures will fall to -2°F Monday night, with wind chills making it feel significantly colder. Outdoor recreation is discouraged, and residents are advised to dress in multiple layers if going outside is unavoidable.

Monday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with highs around 12°F during the day. Winds from the northwest at 10 mph will combine with plunging temperatures to create subzero wind chills. By Tuesday morning, the cold intensifies, with overnight lows of -9°F and wind gusts increasing the risk of frostbite within minutes.

Snow is also expected late Sunday into Monday morning, creating slick conditions on roads, including Route 2 and Interstate 89. Drivers are urged to use caution during the Monday morning commute. Light snow accumulation of up to 2 inches is possible, especially in northern areas.

The week will remain frigid, with daytime highs struggling to exceed 14°F by Wednesday. Wind chills will drop below -10°F through Thursday morning, gradually improving by the end of the week.
