Charlottesville, VA – A winter storm watch has been issued for the Northern and Central Virginia Blue Ridge, with significant ice accumulation and hazardous travel conditions expected from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, up to three-tenths of an inch of ice could accumulate, with sleet and snow totals reaching an inch in some areas. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, increasing the risk of downed trees and power outages.
The storm will begin as sleet Wednesday morning before transitioning to freezing rain by the evening. A light freezing drizzle could persist into Thursday morning before precipitation ends. The heaviest ice accumulation is expected on east-facing slopes.
Officials warn that roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, will become slick and dangerous. Commuters should prepare for major disruptions Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. Travel is discouraged, but those who must drive should exercise extreme caution, allow extra time, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration.
Residents should monitor forecasts for updates and ensure vehicles and emergency kits are prepared for icy conditions.
