Blacksburg, VA – Bitter cold returns to the region this week as Arctic air brings sub-zero wind chills and frostbite risks. Morning commutes from Tuesday through Thursday will be the most dangerous due to frigid temperatures, with mountain areas expected to drop as low as -10 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, wind chills will range from -10 to 0 degrees in the mountains and 0 to 5 degrees in lower elevations like the Piedmont. The extreme cold increases the likelihood of frostbite and hypothermia, especially for children, the elderly, and anyone with prolonged exposure to the cold. Residents are urged to layer clothing, wear hats, gloves, and avoid leaving skin exposed.

Monday will provide a brief respite, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 34 degrees. However, conditions deteriorate starting Tuesday afternoon, when a slight chance of snow showers could create icy patches on roads. Highs Tuesday will barely reach 24 degrees, and gusty winds up to 25 mph will worsen conditions.

Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day, with a high near 20 degrees and a nighttime low plunging to 10 degrees. Roads, including U.S. Route 460, may be impacted by frost, and drivers should plan extra time for travel.

By Thursday, the Arctic air will begin to retreat, with highs returning to the low 30s under mostly sunny skies.
