Virginia x North Carolina Brace for Subzero Temperatures: Extreme Cold Watch Begins Sunday Night

Blacksburg, VA – An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for parts of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia from late Sunday night through Wednesday morning. Temperatures are forecasted to dip into the single digits, with wind chills dropping as low as 20 below zero.

According to the National Weather Service, the watch includes regions west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, including cities like Marion, Pulaski, and Lewisburg. The coldest period is expected Monday through Wednesday, with daytime highs struggling to reach the teens and single-digit lows in the mountains.

Officials warn of frostbite and hypothermia risks for those exposed to the cold without proper protection. Residents should dress in layers, keep pets indoors, and take measures to protect water pipes, such as wrapping or draining them.

This Arctic blast could extend into Thursday, maintaining freezing temperatures across the region. The National Weather Service advises monitoring weather updates and preparing for prolonged cold.
